The collection is particularly noted for the strength of its holdings in French Impressionist, Early Modern, and American paintings by artists including Edgar Degas, John Singer Sargent, John Constable, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Winslow Homer, J.M.W. Turner, Claude Monet, and George Inness.
Along with showcasing its acclaimed permanent collection, the Clark presents special exhibitions throughout the year. Continued additions to the collection and the Institute's long history of collaborating with living artists and contemporary art historians ensures vibrancy and relevance in an ever-changing world.
With 140 acres of expansive lawns, meadows, and woodlands, the Clark is surrounded by profound beauty. The windows of its galleries afford views of woods, fields, pastures, and a lily pond. Walking trails traverse the property, including trails up historic Stone Hill, which offers a spectacular view of Williamstown and the Green Mountains of Vermont to the north.
Extensive programming is held throughout the year on a wide range of topics, intended to engage the public with the Clark's collections, exhibitions, and grounds through valuable, meaningful, even transformative experiences.
One of the few institutions in the United States that combines a public art museum with a research and academic program, including one of the nation’s best art history libraries, the Clark is a leading international center for research and discussion on the nature of art and art history. |
